GE HealthCare Donates $20,000 to Pee Dee Coalition

On behalf of GE HealthCare, we presented $20,000 to Pee Dee Coalition on January 9th in support of their incredible work in our community.

Pee Dee Coalition is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the reduction of sexual assault, family violence, and child abuse and to the needs of victims. It is the belief of the Pee Dee Coalition that the reduction of family violence, sexual assault, and child abuse is a community issue and concerns the total community—not only women—not only service providers—but all who value the basic human desire to be free from physical threat and harm. Through the efforts of Pee Dee Coalition in its entirety, the region will be a safer, more compassionate community. Today, the Coalition serves eight counties: Florence, Darlington, Marion, Dillon, Chesterfield, Marlboro, Williamsburg, and, most recently, Sumter. For 38 years, they have been dedicated to providing services for thousands of victims and survivors across the Pee Dee region.

The money will be used for PEPS (Parent Education Parent Support) which is a 12-week program for at-risk parents or caregivers. This is for abuse and neglect and was initiated in 1996 and is based on Nurturing Parent and Parent’s Anonymous. The purpose is to strengthen families by assisting parents in developing positive and caring relationships with their children through both skills development and peer support. PEPS is an integral part of the Coalitions mission to reduce child abuse through increasing protective factors and reducing risk factors.

Need Volunteers – Florence 1 Schools Can Help

Florence 1 Schools has partnered with Blue Zones to help empower its teachers, staff, students, families, and the Greater Florence community to live a life of well-being and longevity.  Research shows that volunteering boosts well-being and job satisfaction. The district’s board has given its employees a way to be rewarded to volunteer locally.

The district is seeking community organizations with non-religious, non-political opportunities where its employees can take a day away from work to serve on behalf of F1S. Please contact Nathaniel Marshall, F1S Chief Personnel Officer, at nathaniel.marshall@f1s.org to share your organization’s volunteer opportunities with Florence 1 staff.

Florence, SC Has a Burgeoning Food Scene

According to a regional magazine Florence, SC has a burgeoning food scene and an annual festival to celebrate it.

Talk of great food cities in the two Carolina’s always includes Charleston. It frequently includes Raleigh and Asheville, and, in recent years, Greenville, South Carolina.

Rarely does it include Florence, the Pee Dee region city of 40,000 that’s two hours and 20 minutes from Raleigh. Unless you’re talking to Matt Lee or Ted Lee, brothers and food industry A-list.
