HDPT Family Medical Center Host Ribbon Cutting

HDPT Family Medical Center, 514 Second Loop Road in Florence, held a ribbon cutting to celebrate joining the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, September 22nd.

Chief Executive Officer and Chair of the Board Evelyn R. Coe and her son, Vincent Coe, were joined by Chamber staff and ambassadors as she cut the ribbon.

HDPT was started in 2015. The company provides primary medical care to patients, ages 10 and up. It provides additional services such as Department of Transportation physicals, sports physicals and diabetic foot care.

HDPT operates with a staff of four.

Coe said what sets HDPT apart is the understanding of the “what” and “why.”

“Some patients don’t understand the ‘what’ and ‘why,’” she said. “Here can be a disconnect between what is being said and what is being heard. For example, a patient may have previously been diagnosed with diabetes and prescribed certain medication. They could believe it is to manage diabetes alone (the what) but don’t understand the underlying reason (the why) for the medicine. The prescribed medication could be to protect the kidneys, but if the patient isn’t informed or knows about the seriousness of failing to take the medicine, they may decide to stop taking it completely. That decision then puts the kidney function at risk. Our motto is ‘take charge of your health.’ That starts with understanding the ‘what’ and the ‘why’. That’s our starting point.”

Gregg Robinson Speaks on the Economic Growth of Florence County At The Chamber’s Annual Membership Luncheon

Florence County is well-positioned to attract new industries and higher-paying jobs, according to Gregg Robinson. Robinson, CEO of Florence County Economic Partnership, spoke Wednesday, September 21st at the Annual Membership Luncheon of the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce and reflected on his first 70 days on the job. He noted qualities about Florence County that would attract manufacturers, and communicated ways to recruit new businesses and shared the master plan for five new industrial parks.

Robinson spoke to about 500 people.

Robinson, who has nearly 30 years of experience in economic development, started off his speech highlighting the growth Florence County has experienced and credited its growth to the visionaries who saw a vision for Florence County and worked toward it.

“Florence is standing on the back of a lot of visionaries,” Robinson said. “It is about cathedral thinking and building blocks for the future generation to stand on. Even knowing that we will never see the chapel finished. It is always about creating that foundation of success.”

James Marvin Owen named Florence Chamber Business Person of the Year

The Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce 2022 Business Person of the Year is James Marvin Owen.
Owen is one of the owners of ACS. He is president emeritus and chairman of the ACS Board of Directors. Owen has worked for 39 years in service not only to the clients of ACS but also to its employees.
Owen said he has not earned this honor alone. He said this award is a reflection on all of ACS’s nearly 400 employees.

As he came to the podium to accept the award, Owen said, “Wow. Wow … I am humbled and honored by this. This is totally unexpected.”

In making the presentation, Amber Sellers, commercial relationship manager of Wells Fargo, said Owen’s first job was with the Computer Consulting Division of Arthur Anderson in Charlotte. Those four years would provide valuable experience as he made the move in 1983 to a new start-up – Computer Dimensions – in Florence.

Downtown Florence’s Tap into Downtown Craft Brew Crawl Held This Past Weekend

It was a great evening in Downtown Florence this past Friday for the Tap into Downtown Craft Brew Crawl.

Florence Downtown Development wants to thank everyone who attended and spent time visiting the small downtown businesses while sampling a variety of craft beers.

City of Florence Presented With An Achievement Award By The Municipal Association of South Carolina

The Municipal Association of South Carolina presented its Achievement Award to the city of Florence for its downtown revitalization efforts.

The Joseph P. Riley Jr. award was presented by Charlie Barrieneau, the association’s field services manager.

The city was recognized for its efforts to bring Sav-A-Lot grocery store downtown and the City Center Market, which helped to reduce food insecurity in the area. It also developed a health and wellness campus, which includes the Barnes Street Activities Center.

The award also recognized the city’s efforts to help entrepreneurs find grants to locate their businesses downtown.

The awards recognized the city’s downtown redevelopment efforts. Those efforts are continuing.

Keep Florence Beautiful Competitors Run, Paddle Their Way To Victory in Adventure Race

Three types of teams competed Saturday in a two-stage race in which the participants started a 5K and paddled home along five miles of river — the Keep Florence Beautiful Adventure Race at Lynches River County Park.

Participants either ran as individuals (one runner and the same runner as one paddler in a kayak), as a relay team (one runner, a different paddler) or as a tandem team (two run together, two paddle in the same kayak).

The race started in the parking lot above the canoe launch and ended at the US 52 landing on Lynches River.

“It’s our annual fundraiser,” said Bobbie Moore. “Some of the funds go directly back into the park. We also put funds into keep the river clear and we put funds in to do various projects around Florence and Florence County.

The School Foundation Gala is Less Than Two Weeks Away

The School Foundation’s 22nd Annual Gala will be held on Tuesday, September 27th at Florence Darlington Technical College’s SiMT. Distinguished graduate is J. Boone Aiken III, an attorney with Aiken, Bridges, Elliott, Tyler & Saleeby, P.A. At the gala, the buffet will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and the program begins at 7:00 p.m.

At this event the names of the 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year will be announced. The 2022-2023 Principal of the Year as well as the 2022-2023 Assistant Principal of the Year will also be recognized.

Are You REAL ID Ready?

On May 3, 2023, U.S. travelers must be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.  A gold star on your license or ID designates it as a REAL ID. If your license or ID does not have a gold star, it will have a message stating “Not for Federal Identification” and is not compliant to access TSA checkpoints beginning May 3, 2023.

Even though the federal law is not effective until May 3, 2023, anyone can get a REAL ID now.  To learn more, please click here.
