Florence Seeking Federal Help for Water, Sewer – City Spending $138M

The City of Florence operates about 700 miles of water lines and 500 miles of sewer and plans to invest $138 million in improving the system. But it’s hoping to do more work than that with the help of grants. The city’s first round of funding includes borrowing through bonds.

“The city has a bonding capacity up to $270 million there. We’ve used $138 million of that,” City Manager Scotty Davis said last month. “We’re asking the federal government for help. We need help from the federal government. We have about over $300 million in requests, funding requests and grants on the federal government side, almost $30 million at the state side there,” he said.

New Downtown Florence Townhomes On Cheves Street

The new Cheves Row Townhomes are location on West Cheves Street in Downtown Florence.

Teddy Dowling, a partner with the project’s developer, Florence Renaissance Co. said he hopes Cheves Street will have an “obvious front,” similar to Florence’s historical Cherokee Road, which features craftsmen, Tudor and revival-style homes.

The new development is an easy walk to downtown businesses. Many local individuals got to tour units at the townhome’s ribbon-cutting April 2.

Dust Off Your Favorite Cape & Lace Up Your Running (or walking) Shoes & Become a Superhero for Abused Children!

CAPES for Kids is an annual 5K|10K & Kids Fun Run, held in honor of a 3-year old Carver Elementary School student, who lost her life due to physical abuse and neglect in 2011. Formerly known as the Carver C.A.P. Run, this event strives to honor her life, and the lives of children like her, while also raising awareness and support for victims of child abuse in our local community. All proceeds support quality services at the CARE House of the Pee Dee for children who have been abused and their families. This family-friendly event includes children’s activities such as face-painting and inflatables along with a superhero costume contest.

The Greater Florence Chamber is now accepting applications for the 2026 Emerging Leaders Summer Institute. Emerging Leaders is a program designed to generate professional training and development, mentorship, community engagement and recruitment opportunities.

City Offers Earth Day Native Tree Giveaway on April 29

The City of Florence and Duke Energy, in partnership with Naturally Outdoors, Keep Florence Beautiful, and the South Carolina Forestry Commission, will host an Earth Day Native Tree Giveaway on April 29 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, or while supplies last. The event will take place on the back lawn of Naturally Outdoors, located at 2519 W. Palmetto Street.

Trees will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Representatives from the South Carolina Forestry Commission will be available to provide information on the tree species being given away, discuss planting techniques, and answer any arbor-related questions.
