Legislative Update For Week 11

With both the House and Senate were back in session last week. The Statehouse was bustling as lawmakers in both bodies continue to work to advance priorities as the clock on the two-year session is beginning to run out.

Of note, the House and Senate met to ratify acts last Wednesday, officially sending the Income Tax Reform bill (H.4216) to the Governor’s desk for his signature.

Also last Thursday, a House Ways and Means subcommittee advanced two bills (S.831/H.5071) that seek to modernize the Department of Transportation (DOT) and streamline the delivery of infrastructure projects across South Carolina.

FSO Rocks 4 Concert Happening May 21st

The FSO Rocks 4 Concert will be held on May 21st at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center. This high-energy concert, which together with the full power of the Florence Symphony Orchestra, and featured singers and musicians will be play music by artists like REM, ZZ Top, ELO, Doobie Brother, Toto, Led Zeppelin, U2, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac and others.

The evening features legendary guitarist Mike Keneally (known for his work with Frank Zappa), joined by vocalist Jim Stapley, along with standout performers Fran Coleman, Brandon Goff, and more, all performing with the orchestra under the direction of Terry Roberts.

Florence Launching $127 million, Multi-year Water and Sewer System Upgrade

Florence is launching a multi-year initiative to enhance citywide water quality and increase sewer capacity to plan for future growth and a more resilient delivery system, officials said last Wednesday.

The move comes after city leaders approved a long-range master plan for water distribution and sewer collection, targeting capital improvements over the next 20 years using $127 million from bonds and development funds.

2026 Building Bridges Diversity and Leadership Summit

The Florence Chamber held its 2026 Building Bridges Diversity and Leadership Summit on Monday, March 23rd. Community participants were welcomed by City of Florence Mayor Lethonia Barnes and Les Echols from the Florence Chamber.

Several speakers addressed the day-long gathering, including Cynthia Walters of SC Manufacturers and Commerce, Charlee Rhodes from Northwestern Mutual and keynote speaker Dr. DaNine J. Fleming.

The program featured a women in leadership panel moderated by Tabitha James, and an Executive Roundtable featuring executives from QVC, United Way, Assurant and Spherion. The moderator of the Executive Roundtable was Edith Robinson of QVC.

The mission of Building Bridges is to enable our community to address diverse issues through a process of changing attitudes & hearts through education and issue awareness.
