Lucky Dog Animal Rescue Joins Chamber And Hosts Ribbon Cutting

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue celebrated its grand opening of its one-of-a-kind Rescue Campus in Florence, South Carolina (2502 North Williston Road, Florence, SC 29506). The lifesaving campus includes The Lazin Animal Foundation Infectious Disease Infections Care Unit, the JR Peterson Ringworm Center, the Verstanding Family Foundation Community Vet Clinic, and “Stopover Station,” a kennel building to house animals preparing for transport north.
Mayor Teresa Myers Ervin along with representatives from the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce and other community leaders were in attendance to celebrate the grand opening. The event was open to all members of the community as Lucky Dog celebrate this historic day for animals across the rural south.
“We are so excited that this day has finally come,” said Mirah Horowitz, Founder and Executive Director of Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. “Pet overpopulation in Florence is a real challenge. This facility will not only prepare animals for transport to areas where adoptions are possible, it will also help community members care for their pets, preventing unwanted litters and avoiding the need to surrender in the first place.”

“Since its inception in 2009, Lucky Dog has helped save over 23,500 animals, ensuring they go on to live healthy, happy lives. We have seen the process firsthand with our own LDAR rescue dog, Jill.

HopeHealth Hosts Streater Building Dedication

On February 27, HopeHealth hosted a dedication ceremony for the Streater Building project at The Hyatt Place Florence/Downtown. The event featured refreshments from local Black-owned businesses and provided an overview of the Streater Building’s future focused on serving seniors, Veterans, and Black men in the community.

The Streater Building is an important African American architectural landmark of the downtown business district in Florence, dating back to at least 1904 when General Armstrong Streater owned and operated a small mercantile business and grocery store out of the building. HopeHealth purchased the building, located at the corner of Dargan and Darlington Street and across from Sav-a-Lot, in 2018 to utilize it as a place to provide value-based community services outside of the traditional scope of health care.

Upon completion of its revitalization, this HopeHealth project will help strengthen community engagement and work to decrease barriers to care by enhancing the availability and accessibility of health programs.
