A Proposed Trail 32 Miles Long Would Reach To Sumter

The Post & Courier Pee Dee reported that a trail could allow walking or biking from Florence to Sumter.

The 32.1-mile pedestrian and biking trail would connect Florence’s Rail Trail and Sumter’s downtown in the next decade. Though still in its feasibility phase, the trail would establish a greenway following abandoned railroad tracks, just like Florence’s Rail Trail.

Beginning in Florence, the proposed trail would wind through Timmonsville, Lynchburg and Mayesville before ending in Sumter.

With an estimated total cost of $46.9 million, the project would consist of four phases. Phase one would be from Sumter to Mayesville, phase two Mayesville to Lynchburg, phase three Lynchburg to Timmonsville and phase four Timmonsville to Florence.

SPC Cares Foundation Invests In GSSM Students

The Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) Foundation has received a $1,000 gift from the SPC Cares Foundation, the charitable arm of SPC Credit Union, based in Hartsville. The donation will help provide financial assistance for a GSSM student from Darlington, Chesterfield, Florence or Marlboro counties toward their annual meal plan fee.

“SPC’s dedication to strengthening communities—especially through youth education—makes their partnership with GSSM a natural alignment,” said GSSM President Danny Dorsel, a member of the Class of 1990. “We are grateful for their generosity, which expands access to GSSM’s transformative STEM opportunities for even more students and families.”

This gift is part of the long-standing support GSSM has received from the Hartsville community.
